What Is Volcanic Rock Stone?

There is a kind of stone, which originates from nature and often appears in daily life in various forms. It can be called the “group pet” of design! Many friends often mistake it for a cave stone, but in fact, both are very different in origin and characteristics. Perhaps some friends have guessed that, yes, it is today’s protagonist – volcanic rock stone. In this article, let’s talk about volcanic rocks and stones:

01. Definition and characteristics of volcanic rock stone?

1. Definition of volcanic stone

Volcanic rock stone, also known as an extrusive rock, belongs to the category of magmatic rock (igneous rock). It is an extrusive rock formed by the condensation of magma ejected to the surface through the crater. As a new type of functional environmental protection material, the porous volcanic rock stone is very precious.

2. Characteristics of volcanic stone

a. Strong decoration

Volcanic rock materials are simple, natural, beautiful, and fashionable. They are of great ornamental value. At the same time, they can also be perfectly combined with other types of stones to achieve the artistic effect of complementing each other.

b. Wear resistance and corrosion resistance

It has excellent wear resistance and corrosion resistance. Compared with metal, it has a lightweight and long service life. The elasticity and toughness of volcanic stone are much higher than that of steel, the strength is higher than that of light metal alloy, and the corrosion resistance is higher than that of glass.

c. Adjustable climate

The holes on the surface of volcanic rock stone make it have a natural “breathing” function, which can regulate air humidity and improve the surrounding environment.

d. Thermal insulation

Because the original stone of volcanic rock stone is formed by condensation of volcanic lava, it has obvious light absorption and heat resistance function for the environment of absolute high temperature.

e. Sound absorption and noise reduction

Volcanic rock stone has unique natural holes, which are conducive to the auditory environment. It is the only natural material with a sound-absorbing function among all building materials at present.

f. Water absorption and anti-skid

Volcano stone has unique natural pores and has foam material characteristics, water absorption, and skid resistance.

g. Widely used

Volcanic rock stone is widely used, not only in architecture, interior decoration, landscape roads, but also in industrial design fields such as furniture design and product design.

02. Types of volcanic rock stones

The biggest feature of volcanic rock stone is holes, which can be classified according to the size and color of volcanic rock stone holes. At the same time, there are different classifications according to the texture and shape of volcanic rock stone surface.

1. Classification according to stone hole size and color characteristics

It can be divided into five types: millipore volcanic stone, small pore volcanic stone, medium pore volcanic stone, coarse pore volcanic stone, and red volcanic stone.

2. Classification by finish texture

The commonly used stone surface texture can be divided into four categories: natural surface, smooth surface, litchi surface, and chiseled surface.

3. Classification by stone form

It can be divided into three types: volcanic rock plate, volcanic rock crushed stone, and volcanic rock filter material.

a. Volcanic rock plate

Volcanic rock plates are widely used in the market, mainly in architecture and interior design. Because the volcanic rock is hard, it can also produce ultra-thin stone.

b. Volcanic rock rubble

It is mostly used for landscape design or wainscot of building exterior walls.

c. Volcanic rock filter material

It is mostly used for landscape design or road pavement.

03. Construction technology of volcanic rock stone

Volcanic rock stone is most commonly used in the wall. The construction process of wall stone dry hanging: construction preparation → setting out and snapping → embedded plate installation → steel framework fabrication and installation → stone installation → finished product protection.

1. Construction preparation

a. Typesetting and numbering of stone materials.

b. Check the base wall to confirm whether it needs to be chiseled and trimmed.

2. Setting out and snapping

Set out according to the design requirements, snap the skeleton, finish contour line and wall horizontal datum line, and place the channel steel line of each part.

3. Embedded plate installation

According to the design and construction requirements, the galvanized steel plate shall be embedded in the specified position, and the galvanized steel plate shall be fixed on the concrete beam and wall with professional bolts.

4. Fabrication and installation of steel framework

a. The vertical keel of the steel skeleton shall be reasonably arranged on the wall where the steel skeleton needs to be installed according to the snapped division line and shall be fully welded with the four sides of the embedded plate.

b. The horizontal keel adopts galvanized angle steel, the spacing depends on the stone specification and is fully welded with the vertical keel.

c. Before installation, holes shall be pre-punched on one side of the angle steel according to the stone specifications for fixing the pendant, and all welding parts of the keel shall be subject to rust prevention treatment.

5. Stone installation

a. Insert fixing bolts on the steel framework and insert stainless steel or aluminum alloy fixing hangers.

b. According to the design size, fix the stone on the special mold, slot the upper and lower ends of the stone, and open a groove on the back so that the dry hanging parts can be embedded in it.

c. Use AB structural glue to embed the upper groove of the lower stone, insert the connecting pendant, and embed the lower groove of the upper stone.

6. Finished product protection

A, use foam rod to sew and use a special sealant to sew, finish cleaning.

b. Cover the area 2m above the ground with pearl film for finished product protection.

7. Precautions

a. When the width of the dry hanging stone is more than 1m2, the spacing between hanging points in the upper and lower rows should not exceed 700mm, and hanging points should be added in the middle of the stone to prevent the stone from falling off due to insufficient stress.

b. Epoxy dry hanging AB glue must be used for stone hanging (construction shall be carried out in strict accordance with the ratio of 1:1), and marble glue can only be used as temporary fixation.

c. Ordinary carbon steel profiles should be used for steel framework, and stainless steel profiles can be used when there are special needs. Channel steel should be used for steel columns, and angle steel should be used for a transverse steel frame. And shall meet the design and specification requirements.

04. Application of volcanic stone

Because volcanic rock stone has so many advantages, it is widely used in architecture, interior, landscape, and other fields.

Volcanic rock stone, as a “most familiar” strange material, has not been widely known as other natural stones. Its natural pore texture not only absorbs water and sound, is hard and wear-resistant, but also can show different decorative effects. Well, this article will be written here first. I look forward to more exchanges with you.
