How to solve the height difference of stone floor joints?(1)

1、 Issues raised in production practice

With the continuous development of China’s national economy and the continuous improvement of national economic strength, natural stone flooring, due to its luxurious decorative characteristics and durable practicality, although expensive, is still widely used in public areas such as lobbies and corridors in many newly built large public buildings. However, the height difference of stone ground joints is always a common quality issue, especially when the size of stone blocks exceeds 900 mm, the height difference of joints is obvious.

There are two main reasons for uneven joints in stone flooring:

1. Uneven performance of stone materials

There are significant differences in the chemical composition, porosity, water absorption, and other chemical and physical properties of different types of stone. Even if the raw materials are mined in the same mining area, the deeper the burial depth, the greater the internal stress of the ore body. The release of internal stress is a very slow process. If the waste material is processed into sheet metal quickly after mining, the release of internal stress can also cause deformation of the sheet metal. Large plates may also deform during stacking and transportation after processing.

Some types of stone will undergo significant deformation when exposed to moisture, such as large green flowers that will deform and arch. Therefore, considering the differences in stone materials and the deformation caused by water absorption and moisture, it is also unrealistic to achieve a high flatness of building panels, which is not a problem that can be completely solved by current stone processing.

2. At present, the processing of stone processing machinery in China cannot achieve higher accuracy

Most of the large domestic stone processing enterprises have introduced the world’s advanced CNC multi-head grinding machines, making China’s stone processing level reach the world’s advanced level. Because they are all disc-type grinding heads, the middle part of the large plate takes slightly longer to grind than the two sides, so the middle part of the large plate after grinding is usually slightly concave. The unevenness of the stone material causes the uneven thickness of the cut rough board, which can also affect the flatness of the ground large board.

2、 Using new processes to solve old problems

In summary, it is difficult to achieve high-quality ground smoothness like a mirror using traditional stone paving techniques, and it also limits the requirement of using larger specifications in the design. Based on learning advanced experience at home and abroad, the engineering practice of overall polishing of stone floors began in 2001. Multiple projects were completed, including Beijing Oriental Plaza, the National Power Dispatch Center Building, and the Fangfei Garden atrium lobby of Diaoyutai State Guesthouse. The total construction area exceeded 100000 square meters, and preliminary experience was gained in polishing operation technology, controlling flatness, and on-site sandblasting and chiseling.

Due to the use of water-grinding construction, the paved stone must be coated with waterproof and protective agents on six sides. If not coated, it may cause new water stains and pollution during the grinding operation. Through nearly a year of construction practice, the height difference of stone joints has been eliminated; The flatness can be tested with a 2m ruler to achieve a standard of less than 1mm; The smoothness shall not be lower than the production level of regular large factories. The construction operation regulations and quality inspection plan have been preliminarily formulated, and there is still room for further improvement in all aspects.

Due to the adoption of a new on-site grinding process, not only can the common quality problem of uneven stone joints be eliminated, but the quality of the stone floor has reached a new level; At the same time, it also creates more open conditions for design. As long as the paving quality is guaranteed, larger-sized stones can be selected without increasing the thickness of the board. Using standard thickness engineering boards, selecting materials with small color differences and similar textures, rough grinding according to design specifications in the factory, six-sided protection of the stone, on-site paving according to numbers, and finally, overall ground polishing can reduce project costs to a certain extent.
