How to design landscape stone steps?

Simplicity is not simple. Landscape design does not have so many complicated ideas. The same elements can be repeated and changed, such as planting ponds, grasslands, grass steps, water features, terraces, micro terrain, ground paving, and steps, enriching people’s walking and visual experience. Plants can be open and private, creating different spatial feelings. Landscape design is the process of simplifying complexity. Let’s take a look at how stone steps are designed in this article.

What is Tingbu?

Tingbu is a type of stepping stone set on water. It refers to laying stones at certain intervals in shallow water, slightly exposed to the water’s surface, allowing people to step over. The road form of Tingbu can sometimes avoid or reduce the sense of fragmentation caused by roads on green spaces, sand, stones, or water surfaces, enhance the integrity and unity of the landscape, and sometimes play a role in the landscape through its sense of rhythm. The use of this ancient water crossing facility in gardens is simple, natural, and has a unique charm. This type of road surface has the characteristics of simplicity, low cost, flexible paving, strong adaptability, and rich interest.

Laying a trail in the lawn can prevent pedestrians from trampling on the lawn; Commonly found in campuses and parks, it can alleviate the traffic pressure on the main roads and play a role in drainage; At the same time, it can also allow pedestrians to better enjoy the green plants and scenery on both sides of the trail. But when truly applied in real life, the lawn next to the trail is still trampled on, and people’s condemnation of the trail has been constant. Many pedestrians even jokingly call this kind of trail “one step too feminine, two steps pulling the crotch”.

Basic requirements for Stone step design

1. The width of the steps should not be less than 0.3m, the height of the steps should not exceed 0.15m, and should not be less than 0.1m. The steps should be nonslip.

2. If the number of steps is greater than or equal to 18, a rest platform must be installed. The width of the platform should be determined based on the functional use or equipment size buffer space, but should not be less than 1.20m.

3. In areas with poor night lighting conditions, step lights should be installed, and the spacing between step lights should be determined through consultation with a variety and water and electricity professionals.

4. If there is a drainage direction in front of the first step, an interception ditch should be set up to prevent rainwater from scouring the step, causing damage and reducing its service life.

5. The top surface of the step in the pool should be no less than 0.15m above the normal water level, and the surface should not be smooth. The area is generally 0.25m ²~ 0.35m ², The distance between the centers of the steps is generally 0.5 m-0.6 m, and the height difference between adjacent steps should not exceed 0.25m, with a distance generally not exceeding 0.15m.

6. The design of Tingbu should be based on the principle of facilitating the walking of tourists.

Design control points

1. The steps should be made of thick and large-sized stone, and equipped with anti-slip strips, such as 600mm x 340mm x 50mm thick, to appear grand and concise.

2. The environment around the steps should not be designed with irregular structures such as curved flower beds to avoid problems such as unreasonable connections.

3. Pay attention to the significant color difference between the surrounding paving, facade paving, and other stone materials to avoid color mismatch and disharmony with the surrounding environment.

4. The selection of step lights should focus on low light to avoid contrast with the eyes and reduce their functionality.

5. For steps with more steps or poor soil conditions, reinforced concrete steps can be elevated according to the situation to avoid excessive filling or uneven settlement.

Common design issues

1. The steps with a large span are not equipped with railings or handrails.

2. The color scheme of the stone on the step tread is not coordinated with the surrounding stone.

3. No interception ditch was designed in front of the first step, causing rainwater to wash away the road surface.

4. The size and spacing of the steps are unreasonable, and walking is not natural

Tingbu Design Material: Glass Tingbu, Plastic Wood Tingbu, Mountain Stone Tingbu

Tingbu design form: water Tingbu, water Tingbu, lawn Tingbu

Glass step

Glass steps are rarely used in design, as they are slippery and lack safety for the elderly and children.

Plastic wooden steps

Commonly found in courtyard paths, this material cannot be eroded by water for a long time and is prone to decay.

Shan Shi Ting Bu

Shanshi Tingbu may seem like a small path, but it is the most important element in the courtyard. Without it, various parts of the courtyard would become fragmented. Therefore, a beautiful Tingbu design is particularly important for the courtyard.

The courtyard and garden paths are designed to protect the lawn and facilitate walking when the grass is muddy in rainy weather, while also serving as a decoration and beautification! The irregularly arranged steps make this path full of variation. Tingbu, with lush flowers and plants on both sides, is full of vitality. A corner of the incomplete mud brick is exposed in the flowers. A silence settles oneself well. Whether it’s courtyards, residential areas, landscapes, campuses, or parks, this type of walking is the most common. Create a kind of bridge: like a bridge, not a bridge, like stones not between stones, without the form of a bridge, but to cross the bridge. Refusing the design of scheduling stations, small elements can also be masterpieces with infinite creativity.

Tingbu may seem like a few simple stones faces standing in winding streams, caves, and secluded streams, but it portrays the effect of “the mountains and waters within a short distance are vast and profound”, reflecting the infinite natural atmosphere. Whether big or small, high or low, tight or sparse, intermittent or continuous, like music, soothing and rapid. Non-standardized design needs to consider humanization in terms of spacing, materials, and areas, and prioritize functionality to meet the needs of design.
