How to choose the thickness of the stone? (II)

What is the impact of stone thickness on stone products?

3. Special attention should be paid to stone thickness in construction sites

Which thickness of the stone is better for building decoration should be analyzed in a specific case and cannot be generalized.

①    There are different requirements for the thickness of exterior wall products and interior products.

In the 1990s, the thickness of granite and marble plates on stone exterior walls was not less than 30mm. With the progress of the times, the thickness of stone exterior wall stone products has become 25mm, and some projects have stone thicknesses less than 25mm.

The thinning of exterior wall products from a mechanical perspective means that the wind load resistance, impact resistance, and bending resistance are all decreasing, This leads to various safety risks in the decoration of exterior wall stone materials. As long as the conditions are met, hidden safety risks may erupt at any time, leading to the occurrence of serious safety accidents.

② The thickness of granite and marble products should be differentiated

In terms of the physical and chemical properties of rocks, marble lags behind granite in strength, surface compactness, water absorption, and other physical and chemical indexes. Therefore, whether it is exterior wall stone or interior stone, the thickness of marble products must be thicker than granite products to be safer and more reliable.

③ The thickness of products with or without holes in the table panel should be different

Desk panel products are increasingly being used in the decoration of buildings, from star-rated hotels, office buildings, government office buildings, and family residences. The thickness of desk panels has a significant impact on their safety. There are two types of countertops: perforated countertops and nonperforated countertops. The thickness of the deck panel is determined by the method of digging holes or not. The thickness of the board for the drilling platform panel should be greater than that of the nondrilling platform panel. Because the strength of the table panel is greatly reduced after the holes are dug, the strength of the table panel can be improved by increasing its thickness. However, although strengthening can also be used to enhance the strength of the panel, the process is complex and it is better to increase the overall strength of the panel by appropriately increasing its thickness. So the thickness of the marble used for the countertop should not be less than 18mm.

④ The installation method of the desk panel product should be different for different thicknesses

The installation method of the table panel determines the thickness of the processed table panel board. The panel is installed in a bracket-style, as it relies on several support brackets to support the panel. The area without support brackets is the weakest point of the panel, which is prone to damage under external forces or heavy object pressure, leading to product breakage. The thickness of the platform panel used for supporting installation should be thicker than the thickness of the overall platform panel laid on the solid. Figure 4 shows a suspended deck panel. The thickness of this installation method should be thicker than that of a non-suspended installation. Because the suspended area is the weakest point of the deck under force, it is very easy to break and damage the suspended area under external forces or heavy objects.

⑤ Stair step products should be processed with stone with a thickness of no less than 30m

In many places, it can be seen that many stone-decorated stair treads are cracked and the front end is damaged. The main reason is actually that the thickness of the stone used for stair steps is too thin. At present, many stair treads in Chinese buildings are mostly processed with boards with a thickness of less than 20mm, and some even have a thickness of only 15mm. Only by adding edges can the stone be thickened. How can the strength of the stair treads processed in this way not be broken or damaged?

⑥ Different stone materials and thicknesses

Due to the different materials of natural stone, its various physical and chemical performance indicators are also different. The nature of natural marble is completely different from that of natural granite. Different types of natural marble have their own unique characteristics. It is sufficient to use a 20mm thick stone for decoration in this location. When using another type of stone for decoration, a 20mm thick stone may not be suitable, and appropriate adjustments need to be made based on the characteristics of the stone used to ensure that its strength meets the requirements for safe use.

⑦ The thickness of floor products and wall products should be different

The thickness of the stone board used for floor decoration should be at least 5mm thicker than that of the board used for wall decoration, as the floor stone is subject to external impact and pressure from various sources. Over time, the fracture occurred and the damage appeared. And the wall panels are less susceptible to external forces from various parties and are less susceptible to damage. However, there is a lack of designers for this concept. The thickness of stone used on the ground is the same as that of the wall, and the thickness of stone used on the ground is often less than 16.5mm. This situation should be taken seriously and changed.

⑧ The thickness should also vary depending on the application site

The thickness of the stone should be changed depending on the application site. The stone used for the ground of large public squares, such as Beijing Gate Square, train station, and sports stadium square, is thicker than the ground of hotels, shopping malls, and office buildings. Because these places not only have a large number of people passing through every day but there may also be many cars and heavy-duty vehicles passing through, exerting tremendous pressure on the ground. If the thickness of the stone used in these places is too thin, it will not be long before these stones are crushed and crushed. Compared to the ground, the wall panels of indoor decoration can be slightly thinner than the floor panels. Because wall panels have a lower chance of being impacted by external forces when installed on the wall, while floor panels have to withstand the weight of furniture and other heavy objects, and the pressure they bear is greater than that of wall panels. The thickness of the stair treads in the floor panel should be higher than that of the floor panel. Because stair treads are mostly slender strips, they are prone to breakage and damage under pressure.
